The Powerpuff Girls is an American superhero animated television series created by animator Craig McCracken and produced by Hanna-Barbera (later Cartoon Network Studios) for Cartoon Network. The show centers on Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, three kindergarten-aged girls with superpowers.
The girls all live in the fictional city of Townsville, USA with their father and creator, a scientist named Professor Utonium, and are frequently called upon by the city’s mayor to help fight nearby criminals and other enemies using their powers. Take a look below for our list of the 10 best and coolest Powerpuff Girls characters.
1. Bubbles

Bubbles is portrayed as having blonde hair in two pigtails and a neat, curved fashion and sky blue eyes. Her dresses are sky blue with a black-centered stripe and she wears white tights and black Mary Janes. The Ending Theme refers to her as “the joy and laughter,” meaning that she is defined as very sweet. In Meet Fuzzy Lumpkins short when she was hit from Fuzzy’s meat gun, one of her pigtails turned into a chicken drumstick.
In the episode The City of Clipsville, there is a brief scene where the Girls come across a makeup kit, triggering this memory. Along with this, the Girls imagine a scenario in which they are teenagers and have given up their crime fighting habits, causing the city to be full of chaos, as well as a new look. Bubbles’ teenage counterpart is shown to be taller and curvier, as well as having eyelashes.
Like her younger counterpart, she still maintains her pigtails but they are much longer, making this hairstyle reminiscent of the hairstyle her Powerpunk counterpart Brat wears. She is also shown with muted red lipstick, a high waisted blue halter crop top with a red heart on it, and low cut flared jeans embellished with yellow flowers on the left knee, as well as matching sneakers. The “teenage” Powerpuff Girls also appear to have flat feet, which their 5-year-old counterparts don’t have.
Bubbles does have a tendency to be overemotional, despite having a habit to be ditzy, naive and sensitive, leading to her sometimes being regarded as the group’s weakest link, by friends and foes alike. However, she can become very independent and aggressive, let alone extremely mad when tempted, as seen in Bubblevicious.
Out of all the Powerpuff Girls, she is the most feared by Mojo Jojo after having single-handedly taken him down in a fit of rage in the aforementioned episode. At one point, Bubbles gets severely hit on her head and dresses up as Mojo to fight her sisters.
2. Buttercup

Buttercup has short black hair in a flip with a small triangular part on her forehead. She has lime green eyes and dresses in a lime green dress that has a black stripe in the middle of it. Buttercup also wears white tights and black Mary Jane shoes with her dress. Her special ingredient is spice and her signature color is light green.
In the episode The City of Clipsville, there is a brief scene where the Girls come across a makeup kit, triggering this memory. Along with this, the Girls imagine a scenario in which they are teenagers and have given up their crime fighting habits, causing the city to be full of chaos, as well as a new look. Unlike her younger counterpart, Buttercup’s hair is clearly longer, and styled in a shoulder length lob with a flip at the ends.
She is also shown with eyelashes, bright red lipstick, and a curvier figure. She wears a green crop top with a red number “7” on it, high waisted dark green flared pants with a lighter green bow on the waistline, and dark green shoes. The “teenage” Powerpuff Girls also appear to have flat feet, which their 5-year-old counterparts don’t have.
Referred to in the ending theme as “the toughest fighter,” she is the group’s tough member and is easily enraged. Sometimes this, and her aggression, get the better of her, making her a little reckless and stubborn (but she overcame it in “Makes Zen to Me”). However, as displayed in “Bubblevicious”, she has enough control so as to not go “overboard” on innocent civilians like Bubbles did, no matter how trivial the offense.
She also showed a greedy side in “Moral Decay,” to which she knocked out teeth for the sole purpose of obtaining money. She has shown these sides, and a softer side in several episodes. For example, in the episode “Cover Up,” she had a soft green blanket that she was obsessed with that she would hug that gave her the confidence to be a better fighter, and she is quite protective over her sisters. In “The Rowdyruff Boys,” she has a tremendous disdain for resorting to kissing the boys in order to eliminate them, though willingly kisses a boy ridden with what she feared to be “cooties” in the episode “Cootie Gras”.
In the episode “Nuthin Special,” her special “ability” is revealed to be that she can curl her tongue (Blossom and Bubbles cannot do this, nor can anyone else in Townsville). She possesses a violent and a mean streak not displayed by her sisters. She is also shown to bully on her fellow classmate Elmer Sglue, who becomes a mutant paste hostile abnormal eater, which make both Blossom and Bubbles force her to apologize to him.
3. Blossom

Blossom has long, fiery red-orange, waist-length hair with a triangular part and bangs and pink eyes. She wears a pink dress that has a black stripe in the middle with white tights and black Mary Janes. She has a red bow on the top of her head and a heart-shaped hair-clip that can be seen from behind.
As the smartest member and self-proclaimed leader of the Powerpuff Girls she is often seen as the most mature, level-headed and composed member of the group. She can also be fussy, overbearing, vain and overly analytical at times. She tends to protect Bubbles and Buttercup, and often tries to play peacemaker between the two if -they fight, but ironically, she is quick to argue with Buttercup who acts on impulse as opposed to her analytical nature. She is naturally caring to mainly her sisters, but also the Professor and others.
In the episode The City of Clipsville, there is a brief scene where the Girls come across a makeup kit, triggering this memory. Along with this, the Girls imagine a scenario in which they are teenagers and have given up their crime fighting habits, causing the city to be full of chaos, as well as a new look. Blossom’s teenage counterpart still maintains her long hair in a ponytail only more longer down to her lower legs.
Her ponytail is tied up with a red ribbon in place of her younger counterpart’s big red bow She is also shown with eyelashes, bright red lipstick, and a curvier figure. She wears a pink tank top, dark pink pants, and pink shoes. The “teenage” Powerpuff Girls also appear to have flat feet, which their 5-year-old counterparts don’t have.
In “A Very Special Blossom”, a darker side to Blossom is shown when she resorts to stealing the Pro-Excellence 2000 Golf Clubs for the Professor, who later says it’s his fault for putting too much value in a material item instead of the love for the Girls. For this, her first (and fortunately only) offense, Blossom was sentenced to 200 hours of community service, which was a harsh reminder to her and to all that crime doesn’t pay.
This was not the last time she has justified bad behavior with logistical reasoning, such as when Professor Utonium stole toys while sleep-walking and said it was okay because he wasn’t doing it consciously, or when she’d keep breaking Mojo out of jail under the premise of them getting rewarded and ultimately putting Mojo back in jail.
4. Mojo Jojo

Mojo Jojo is a notorious chimpanzee mad scientist, whose main goal is to destroy the Powerpuff Girls, crush Townsville, and conquer the world, in that order. In order to do this, he spends much of his time plotting and inventing new weapons or technology.
This normally comes in the shape of giant robots or large energy/laser weapons. He is the archenemy of the girls and the creator of the Rowdyruff Boys. He is verbose and has high-vocabulary use and long-lasting sentences. He was the Powerpuff girls’ first major villain that they ever fought, as explained in “The Powerpuff Girls Movie.”
Mojo Jojo is one of The Powerpuff Girls’ toughest rivals. Despite usually failing, he has managed to defeat them several times, or at least injure them badly. Mojo Jojo is also the most persistent one and is determined in destroying them and ruling the world. Due to his high intelligence, Mojo sometimes discovers some of The Powerpuff Girls’ weaknesses (As seen in Not So Awesome Blossom). Mojo is also magnificent and cunning and often plays with the Powerpuff Girls’ naivete.
Mojo, for the most part, does whatever he wants. He doesn’t follow the rules and doesn’t care what people think of him. He’s also something of a loner and dislikes being surrounded by humans, and to be bothered in the middle of his experiments and plans. However, he has no problem with being assisted if the situation calls for it. Unlike most villains, Mojo is smart enough not to underestimate the Powerpuff Girls, and therefore uses his gadgets and plans to keep up with them.
Despite being rather dark-natured, Mojo lives another life outside of scheming. He is sometimes seen buying food instead of stealing it, and building model ships. Mojo is also quite sophisticated, despite his persistent desire to rule the world.
He tends to act cordial and friendly to other citizens and strangers when not committing crimes, as well as showing good manners, and is not openly hostile towards the Powerpuff Girls when they’re not getting in his way. He’s also surprisingly fine with them borrowing things from him, and sometimes even manages to make friendly conversations with them, when they’re not fighting.
Mojo also has a sense of honor (albeit a twisted one). In the movie, he sought revenge on humans due to his race being discriminated against them and stayed loyal to his ape army until they ganged up on him. Mojo also sometimes works with other villains without betraying them and appears to have a friendship with most of them.
He’s able to help people, but usually only if he gets something out of it, or if it’s in his self-interests. However, he once helped the Powerpuff Girls get rid of Professor Utonium as a teammate, despite the fact he had nothing to gain from the arrangement.
5. Him

Him has a very androgynous appearance. He has large lobster-like claws, pointed ears, black widow’s peak hair, lime green eyes, a hooked nose, and a long, curled beard. He has three long eyelashes on each eyelid, rosy pink cheeks, and black lips, very often in a wide smile. A lady’s red jacket and skirt with pink tulle at the collar and hemline, a black leather belt with a bronze buckle, and black, thigh-high, spike-heeled boots complete his look.
He has been shown in numerous satanic forms as well, most of which are often revealed in apocalyptic, hellish situations or realms. These forms often enhance his power and cause him to grow an enormous size. When engaged in battle, he is an entity to be reckoned with; one example of his true form was witnessed in Speed Demon when he became a giant muscular red-skinned demon with yellowish-green glowing eyes, pointed ears, and sharp jagged teeth.
His torso was bare, revealing a toned chest and well-defined abdominal muscles. His lobster-like claws became enormous and turned shining black. He sported black thighs, high spiked boots with a scale pattern and a pink garment made of fur with his voice also losing its original effeminate falsetto and being replaced with a full demonic, masculine growl.
Him is shown to be an extremely dark soul. He is bitter, evil, ruthless, mysterious, diabolical, domineering, and possesses seemingly no motive other than the personal sadistic pleasure of others suffering. He treats everyone as a plaything, an easily replaceable toy that can be controlled and broken to his heart’s content.
It is shown that Him could destroy the world quite easily if he wanted too, though his insistence on playing mind games with the girls to make things entertaining for himself is always his downfall as he has a bad habit of underestimating the girls’ willpower and overall resourcefulness as a unit. This is likely due to his inability to comprehend their sisterly bond and the internal strength that comes with it.
Unlike most villains, Him learns from many of his mistakes as he mentioned himself. Pretty much everyone, even the villains in Townsville are frightened of Him, though it is shown he is on decent terms with some of them from time to time.
6. Professor Utonium

Professor Utonium introduces himself as “Professor – Professor Utonium” in The Powerpuff Girls Movie. According to his past, mentioned in Get Back Jojo, Utonium started out as a terrible brat who had no interest in education, let alone science; but when three “perfect little girls” from the future rescued him from Mojo Jojo, Utonium became so obsessed with science that he eventually created the trio we know today.
He is overprotective of the Girls. He is a very affectionate and supportive father, whose pep talks often bring the girls around when they are discouraged. While he is sometimes portrayed as rather skittish, he can be reasonably strict with the girls when he needs to be, particularly when they were falling asleep in school.
Utonium is a keen golfer. Ironically, his most successful inventions are those that he makes by accident – such as the Powerpuff Girls themselves, or the containment device seen in “Bubble Boy” (he says of it: “Once again, I have no idea what I did!”). Most inventions he creates on purpose usually don’t work or have some great flaw. This extends to his cooking skills as well, the chili he made for the Townsville cookoff one year resulted in a hazmat team bordering off the house.
In Knock it Off and Town and Out, the Professor is shown to lack common sense. In the former he never realized his college too late was taking advantage of him. In the latter, he moved to Citysville for his new job instead of commuting.
Professor Utonium is also unlucky in love if his relationships with Sedusa, Ms. Keane, and Ms. Bellum are any indication. Sedusa wormed her way into the family circle so that she could keep the Powerpuff Girls from interfering with her crime sprees. Ms. Keane, on the other hand, did not like nor understand his aversion to cats; a blatant reference to “Cat Man Do.” He was also the would-be husband of Ms. Bellum.
7. Mayor of Townsville

The Mayor of Townsville, a.k.a. Mayor is a primary character whose main role in the show is calling the Powerpuff Girls if trouble wreaks havoc over the town, but this is not always the case as he sometimes has a bad habit of asking them to help him with some trivial problem, such as opening a normal jar of pickles.
The Mayor of Townsville is referred throughout only as “Mayor” (even campaigning with the slogan “vote for Mayor for Mayor”), although he is referred to as “Honey” by his wife in the episode “Boogie Frights.” He is short and old with a fringe of white hair around a bald scalp, a thick mustache, and a scatterbrained-sounding voice. He wears a monocle and a small, black top hat that floats just above his head.
He also wears a violet blazer-coat, white turtleneck undershirt, a blue sash which has written ‘Mayor’ on the front, yellow vest, orange striped trousers, a red bow tie, with black and white boots. He also has white chest hair underneath his primary outfit. While fighting against Fuzzy Lumpkins in a wrestling match, he was seen in his wrestling attire and his chest hair is exposed while wearing the outfit.
In “Tough Love,” and many other episodes, it is shown that he is very fond of pickles, and his little hat. He also seems to be fond of bananas. He is almost completely stupid, and without the Powerpuff Girls or Ms Bellum to guide him, Townsville would have been destroyed long ago. The Mayor is married to a woman who looks very much like him, although apparently their marriage is a rather lame one and he rarely mentions her. He appears to dislike his wife pretty much.
In the episode “Powerpuff Bluff,” he is willing to trade his wife in exchange for a “priceless, very rare, one-of-a-kind” porcelain poodle. He is as well shown to have a deep attraction to his attractive deputy, Miss Bellum, and shows to get greatly aroused when she is around him and depression when supposedly kidnapped in Something’s a Ms.
8. Brick

Brick is the male equivalent and the evil counterpart of Blossom. He is the leader of the Rowdyruff Boys and was originally created by Mojo Jojo. After being killed by the Powerpuff Girls’ kiss of death, he was revived by Him and was given a cootie shot to prevent the same mistake to be repeated. Opposed to Blossom’s feminine color pink, Brick’s color is a masculine fire engine red. His key element is “Puppy Dog’s Tail.”
Created along with his brothers by Mojo in a jail cell, he is the first to speak and hits Mojo for hugging them. They are quickly persuaded into fighting the Powerpuff Girls and help Mojo break out of prison. Upon tracking down the Powerpuffs, they introduce themselves by saying “We’re the Rowdyruff Boys and we wanna fight!” before punching the girls.
Brick is caught off guard by Buttercup who pins him against a dumpster. Boomer and Butch knock her off and proceed to gang up on her. Expressing his disbelief that the girls didn’t cry, he and the boys attack their counterparts. They’re shown to be mostly even but when the girls gain the upper hand, Brick gets annoyed. He orders a “Ballistic Barrage,” one of the Rowdyruff Boys’ team abilities; a disorientating series of jumps before a group pummeling. Knocked down by the Powerpuff’s own group attack, they launch a full-on charge; swinging Blossom around by her hair, smashing a car and even flying under a woman’s skirt. In this fight, he is the only one seen using laser-vision, though Boomer possibly uses it off screen.
They “play dirty” by throwing vehicles full of innocent civilians at the girls and then hitting them when they’re distracted. Brick watches happily while Boomer and Butch argue over who “got” the girls the best. Drawn out of Townsville to protect the people, Brick orders them to “kick in the afterburners” to overtake the girls, the “smoke” leaving them blinded allows the boys to charge up and dive bomb them, smashing them into the ground with such a strong force they cause an explosion. The girls are left battered and broken in the wake. The boys fly off to celebrate with Mojo.
9. Ms. Sara Bellum

Usually, besides the Mayor, Ms. Bellum is his deputy and the “brains” of his operations. The Mayor himself believes that she is the real head of Townsville. She has red hair, wears a red dress, red shoes, and her face is almost never shown throughout the series.
She is the Mayor’s very competent and statuesque ginger. She has a Junoesque figure, long curly bright red hair, a dark red dress suit that exposes her curvaceous shape, and red pumps on her feet. and speaks with a throaty, alluring, and quite unruffled voice. She handles things the Mayor can’t, which is practically everything. Her face is never shown onscreen, except for one instance in a form of a dog in “Monkey See, Doggie Do”, although “The Powerpuff Girls Rule!” briefly revealed part of it.
Whenever she appears, an object will either block her face or the camera will cut off everything above her neck. Whenever she is the center of attention (as when Blossom’s mind was switched to her body or when she fought Sedusa), her hair often covers her face. Other onscreen characters often claim that she is very pretty, with the exception of the abrasive Talking Dog.
In the bleak future of the episode “Speed Demon”, she expresses an obsessive attachment to the Mayor’s hat out of grief, possibly proving that she is in love with him. She attended elementary school with the Professor and Ms. Keane prior to the creation of the Powerpuff Girls.
10. Boomer

Boomer is the blond-haired, blue-eyed member of The Rowdyruff Boys. He is Bubbles’ male equivalent and evil counterpart and was originally created by Mojo Jojo. After being killed by the Powerpuff Girls’ kiss of death, he was revived by Him and was given a cootie shot to prevent the same mistake to be repeated. As opposed to Bubbles’ color sky blue, Boomer’s is more like a cobalt blue. His key element is “Snips”.
Boomer is the second in the Rowdyruff Boys. Boomer and his brothers were creations of Mojo Jojo. He shares many of Bubble’s physical traits, having short blond hair parted in the middle which flips outwards in a similar style. His signature color is cobalt blue.
Like his brothers, he has a signature colored shirt with black stripe, black pants, and black sneakers. His “recipe ingredients” are Snips. Like his brothers, he is also sly and cool. In Boomer’s first appearance he was agreeable as he had followed orders with no retorts or delays as well as had agreed when butch stated about having burritos for lunch, except when the boys triple punch the girls after catching the vehicles, as he stated he had hit them harder.
He was also corrective as when he corrects Mojo that they are not babies. In this first appearance, he does not appear smart nor dimwitted and usually does exactly what his brothers do. As the same with his brothers, he was conformed as a team. After his reincarnation he becomes loud-mouthed dimwitted, And often retorts against his brothers and the PowerPuff Girls such as saying “But I thought we was…” before being interrupted by Brick and after getting a soda can crushed into his face he states that Brick had said the same thing he had, as well as telling the girls they are going to eat their words, spit them out and then eat them again.
Like Bubbles, he can be a bit dim at times but more in his case as it didn’t occur to him that the odds were stacked against Boomer when the Powerpuffs cornered him alone without Brick and Butch nearby and even took his time savoring candy which, of course, left him open for a total beat-down from the girls. And this all happened after Boomer dared the girls to do so. Some things go way above Boomer’s head. He’s also Bubbles’ equivalent in the sense that he is the loud-mouthed dimwit of the trio, as opposed to Bubbles’ naive sweetness.
