10 Of The Best Dragon Type Pokemon

Dragon Type Pokemon are super effective against one another, but are weak to certain elements like Fairy and Ice Type Pokemon. However, there are plenty of strong dragon type Pokemon; some are even considered legendary. Take a look below for 10 of the best Dragon Type Pokemon.

1. Rayquaza

Rayquaza has an elongated, green serpentine body with yellow oval patterns. Red-tipped fins extend from its body and additional appendages lengthen from its serpentine head. Rayquaza has sharp, conical teeth, some of which appear to be covered by gum tissue similar to a Komodo dragon’s. It lacks back legs, but has two arms with three white claws. Its tail is tipped with two small red-edged fins.

Upon Mega Evolution, Mega Rayquaza’s body lengthens further, and is marked with black bands. Its horns become more prominently V-shaped and its head longer, with the delta symbol visible on its forehead. Glowing gold and orange tendrils stream from its two horn tips and both sides of its head, with the latter two tendrils ending in small, fin-like green structures.

Mega Rayquaza’s lower jaw juts out in spiked protrusions far past its eyes, whose gold pupils and red irises sit at the head of black marks streaking to its neck. Flame-like projections burn from its jaw. Golden orbs replace the rings lining its body, and yellow ribbon-like extensions connect to the base of its tail.

Rayquaza eats water particles from the sky where it lives, and only descends when it wants to rest or if its fellow weather Pokemon, Kyogre and Groudon engage in combat. As it descends rarely, no one knows about its special powers and no one knows where it came from.

2. Garchomp

Garchomp is a bipedal shark-like Pokemon colored mostly red and dark blue. On its head it possesses two horn-like appendages and a star-like yellow mark on its snout. Its arms have one claw each, and triangular fins emerge from its elbows and back.

Upon Mega Evolution, its claws extend into scythes and its body is covered in more spikes with two red spikes.

Shiny Garchomp is colored mostly orange and dark green. As Mega Garchomp, its body becomes Pink and Purple with two pink spikes.

Garchomp are relentless pursuit predators that chase down their prey while never allowing them to escape. They are seldom seen in the wild as they live in caves. They are loyal and friendly towards their trainers though, as demonstrated by Prof. Sycamore’s Garchomp in the anime.

3. Dragonite

Dragonite greatly differ from their sea serpent-like pre-evolved forms. Both Dratini and Dragonair had a blue coloring with no limbs or wings. Dragonite are large, orange, bipedal dragons, with two turquoise wings on its back.

Dragonite largely resembles a Charizard, as both have the same orange coloring, and the same blue underside of their wings, except for its lack of a flame on the end of their tails, and a somewhat rounder, and friendlier appearance. However, in the anime, Dragonite is rarely seen smiling.

Despite its bulky build, Dragonite is capable of flying faster than the speed of sound. It can circle the globe in sixteen hours, traveling roughly 1,556 MPH (2,505 KM/H), or about three times the speed of an average airplane. A kindhearted Pokemon with human-like intelligence, Dragonite shows signs of altruism: it is said to save humans from drowning and lead lost or foundering ships to safety.

As demonstrated in the anime, however, it will go on an uncontrollable, destructive rampage if its environment is threatened. Dragonite is very rare in the wild, typically living near the sea. Some claim that there is an island somewhere in the ocean that only Dragonite inhabit.

All Dragonite have the ability Inner Focus which allows it to keep from flinching in a battle. They can also have Multiscale as an Hidden Ability, because Multiscale halves damage from any attack when the user is at full HP Dragonite has become a common sight in competitive battling.

4. Salamence

Salamence is a blue and red dragon like Pokemon with huge red wings and red eyebrows. It has large blue ears and its front and the differences between the regular color and the shiny variant of Salamence are that it has a green body while the belly plates, and red sections have changed to orange. It is big enough that a trainer could stand on its back.

This Pokemon’s powerful desire to fly triggered a mutation that allowed it to grow large, red wings. As an expression of joy, it flies around and releases blasts of fire. If enraged, it loses all sense of self and flies into an uncontrollable rampage, destroying everything around it until it tires itself out. This Pokemon is found living in rough terrain.

The stress of Salamence’s vaunted wings becoming misshapen in its Mega Evolution aggravates it to the point of rampaging. This fuels its already brutal nature and makes it likely to turn against the Trainer who raised it. Because of this, Mega Salamence is feared as “The blood-soaked crescent”. Anything and anyone in Salamence’s path gets sliced in two by its blade-like wings, posing no interruption to its flight.

5. Hydreigon

Hydreigon is a large three-headed draconian Pokemon. It is mainly blue with black scruffy fur covering its arms and neck. The black fur that covered up its eyes as a Deino and Zweilous has disappeared, creating a frill-like appearance and is now magenta in color. Instead of having one wing-like appendage on each side of its body, it now has three wings on each side of its body that allow it to fly.

On the end of each arm is a smaller blue head with eyes and a mouth, but no brain. Zweilous uses both its main head and its head-like hands to voraciously devour its food. After Zweilous evolved, its tail has grown longer and has magenta scales on the underside as well as a black tip on the end. Its round, plump belly has two rows of magenta scales just like it had when it was a Zweilous. Its abdomen seems to have grown plumper and fuller as a result of eating so much food as a Zweilous.

Hydreigon is said to be a violent and brutal Pokemon that devours and destroys everything it sees. However, it appears to be harmless and loyal when raised and owned by a skilled trainer. As seen in the anime, it will allow its trainer to ride upon its back and fly. In Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity Hydreigon is a wise and very kind Pokemon who represents and embodies the Voice of Life; he is endearingly quirky and will assist the hero throughout the game.

6. Dialga

Dialga is a sauropod-like Pokemon. It is mainly blue with some gray, metallic portions, such as its chest plate, which has a diamond in the center. It also has various, light blue lines all over its body. It has a, somewhat, wing-like structure on its back, and a crest on its head, resembling a type of dinosaur. Dialga also has two horns on top of its head, two fang-like horns around its mouth, long claws, and a short tail, almost the impression of armor.

Dialga was created when Arceus hatched from its egg and created the world. Arceus tasked Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina to create time, space, and anti-matter respectively. Dialga was worshiped as the master of time and metal, as it is a steel-type Pokemon. It is said that time flows whenever Dialga’s heartbeat pulsates.

Dialga has the ability Pressure, which causes the opposing Pokemon to use twice as much PP for every successful hit. Dialga has the ability to control time. Dialga, like many other Dragon-type Pokemon, can use many different elemental attacks. It is also one of the few Pokemon that can learn the move Aura Sphere. Capturing it gives an item called the Adamant Orb, which strengthens Dialga’s steel and dragon type moves by 20%.

7. Giratina

Giratina’s Altered Forme is a giant, dragon-like Pokemon, with an appearance similar to that of a large sauropod. It has 6 legs, gold protrusions that look like external ribs, and golden horns on its head. Its neck has five red stripes and 4 black stripes. On its back, it has a black stripe pattern that extends to its legs.

It has black wings with three red thorn-like appendages called Girasols (a rare type of opal) coming out of them. Giratina’s Origin Forme is more serpentine (like an amphitheater) than its Altered Forme. Its wings are now shaped like tentacles with the red thorn-like appendages sticking out at the end.

Its mouth is now behind the two appendages in front of its face. They open when Giratina roars or etc. The horns on its head are still the same. Giratina in Origin Forme has five rows of golden spikes protruding out of the torso and near the tail. Five gray and red stripes are partially overlapped by these spikes.

Like some Pokemon, it has a signature move, called Shadow Force, which hits the opponent without fail even if the foe uses Protect or Detect beforehand. When in its Origin Forme, it retains its phenomenal amounts of HP, like any other Pokemon that is in their alternate forms, and it focuses on more offensive moves, and less on the defensive moves.

It switches its Attack stats with its Defense stats in its Origin Forme, making it a great powerhouse. It is also a vastly powerful Pokemon that can use these benefits to fit the trainer’s focus on attacking.

It will become Origin Forme when in the Distortion World, or when holding the Griseous Orb, which can be found in a secret part of the Distortion World that can only be entered through a portal in Turnback Cave (the portal will only open if you catch Giratina in the Distortion World) or get it before catching it.

Among the most complex Pokemon to understand, Giratina is both malevolent and dreaded in both it’s nature and appearance. For all the fear it receives, Giratina can be merciful to less evil creatures. A decent example of it’s merciful side, is that it will freely allow the player to enter and leave the distortion world, even in defeat and despite Team Galactic’s previous meddling.

Giratina, along with Dialga and Palkia, was created when Arceus hatched from its egg. Arceus tasked Giratina to create anti-matter. Giratina was known (other than Mewtwo) to be one of the most aggressive Pokemon. Because of this, Arceus banished Giratina to the Distortion World, where it supposedly would be trapped forever.

8. Haxorus

Haxorus is a bipedal Pokemon with a dark yellow-green covering on its back and most of the front. It has black skin covering its torso, tail tip, and thighs, as well as red talons and claws. Its large tusks, which resemble scythes, are black and edged in red, and are located on its upper jaw on the side of its mouth. These tusks, which can cut steel beams, are unbreakable.

Its medium-sized eyes are red with black pupils. Ridged plate-like skin travels from its back to its head region. It has solid armor and the legs and tail have a dividing line pattern. Its arms are quite small, with three digits with two elliptical triceps and biceps and circular elbows. Its hands are small and circular with small red claws. Its legs are formidable and strong with three toed feet with a red talon on each toe. It is generally friendly, but it is very territorial.

9. Kyurem

Kyurem is portrayed as an ice-covered, hunch-backed draconian entity with small arms and large bulky legs, along with a damaged wing and chipped horn. Its ice-covered wings are attached to its shoulder blades. It has a fin-like structure by its neck with a small yellow streak down its head. Ice covers its face completely except for its eyes, which are yellow. Additionally, Kyurem has two other forms in which it can be fused with either Zekrom or Reshiram.

Kyurem can produce ultra-cold air. It can also change form by using the DNA Splicers (Drayden’s family treasure) to turn Reshiram or Zekrom back into the Light Stone or Dark Stone and then merging with it. The process can also be reversed. In Black and White Versions 2, when under the control of Ghetsis, it appears to turn into some sort of awakened form where its wings are revealed to be node-like appendages that absorb energy, as well as tendrils that shoot fiery energy which it uses to trap Zekrom/Reshiram, then absorb them.

There are conflicting ideas on the origin of Kyurem. According to the old woman in Lacunosa Town, Kyurem descended from an icy comet, which simultaneously created the Giant Chasm, and took residence there. In Pokemon Black 2 and White 2, however, it is stated by Drayden that Kyurem was created alongside Reshiram and Zekrom and may be all that’s left.

Also, in-game, it is found out that the substance that makes up the Giant Chasm dates from the same time period as Dragonspiral Tower. This version of the story is more viable based on the Pokédex entry that states that Kyurem wishes to be completed with truth and ideals, thereby becoming the Original Dragon once more.

10. Latios

Latios is a Pokemon with a bird-like body stylized after a plane. Its body flows slowly into a thick neck, giving it a bulky appearance. It has no legs, usually floating instead. Most of its body is blue, with white areas near its arms and a white stripe on its back that extend up to its head. Jet-plane wings sit on top of its back, while two tall, jagged fins point behind it from its rear.

A red triangle marks the center of its chest, while a blue mask partially covers its face. Long, ear-like fins extend from its jaws to over its head, and its eyes are red. It has three-fingered arms with a blue covering on the outer side of the lower arms. Latios is a male only species, with Latias being its female counterpart.

As Mega Latios, the blue parts of its body change to purple. Horns grow from the side of its head and run along its jaw. It loses the wings on its back and similar but larger wings attach to its lower arms, normally held in a level position. Triangle shapes now mark the forward point of its wings instead if its chest.

Latios can fly faster than a jet by tucking in its arms. In the fifth movie, Latios had the ability “Sight Sharing” which allowed Latias and people around it to see exactly what Latios was seeing. Oakley also mentioned that it can shape-shift. It prefers compassionate Trainers, to whom it opens its heart. It uses telepathy to detect locations and the emotions of others, and can understand human speech. It lives by the water’s edge. Latios is the only known Pokemon capable of learning Luster Purge.
