Grand Theft Auto IV is a 2008 action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It is the eleventh title in the Grand Theft Auto series, and the first main entry since 2004’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Set within the fictional Liberty City (based on New York City), the single-player story follows a war veteran, Niko Bellic, and his attempts to escape his past while under pressure from loan sharks and mob bosses. The open world design lets players freely roam Liberty City, consisting of three main islands.
The game is played from a third-person perspective and its world is navigated on-foot or by vehicle. Throughout the single-player mode, players play as Niko Bellic. An online multiplayer mode is included with the game, allowing up to 32 players to engage in both co-operative and competitive gameplay in a recreation of the single-player setting. Two expansion packs were later released for the game, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, which both feature new plots that are interconnected with the main Grand Theft Auto IV storyline, and follow new protagonists.
Development began soon after the release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and was shared between many of Rockstar’s studios worldwide. The game introduced a shift to a more realistic and detailed style and tone for the series. Unlike previous entries, Grand Theft Auto IV lacked a strong cinematic influence, as the team attempted an original approach to the story. As part of their research for the open world, the developers conducted field research around New York throughout development and captured footage for the design team.
Take a look below for our list of 10 of the best Grand Theft Auto IV mods you can download right now.
1. Hulk Mod
In HULK Mod , created by JulioNIB (with a skin made by ac.amir), our favorite green Goliath punches and stomps, swings lampposts and hurls vehicles, leaps onto helicopters, climbs up buildings in a cloud of rubble, and even catches rockets in mid-air and throws them back. Glorious. Hulk smash? Try Hulk IS a smash! Also, though, Hulk smash.
2. Dubstep Gun Mod
Look, GTA shouldn’t be as colorful and exaggerated as the worlds or weapons in Saints Row. But the urge of using the Dubstep Gun was too great for me to overcome. I really enjoyed it in this game as well, so I have to admit my personal bias compels me to toss this one into the list too.
It could be a few spots higher up the list, but I know that some of you would rather keep things as lore-friendly as possible. Nothing wrong with that! But this mod is quite fun since allows you to shoot cars with musical rounds and make them dance. Yes, it sounds ridiculous. Yes, it’s also really fun to watch.
3. Shark-O-Matic Gun Mod
As its title suggests, this mod will make a crazy shark break the ground and eat the victims. It looks like the movie Sharknado almost.
4. Icenhancer Mod
iCEnhancer 2.1 will be the last iteration of the mod, which bestows a vastly enhanced version of the game’s graphical tech. The mod, created by 21-year-old French coder Haysam Keilany, is available to download for free from iCELaGlacE.com.
You’ll need to patch a retail version of GTA4 to the 184.108.40.206 build, download the quick tool Xliveless to replace a .dll file in the GTA4 directory, then finally download iCEnhancer 2.1.
5. Gravity Gun Mod
Gravity Gun is a modification that brings the title weapon known to fans of Half-Life 2 to Grand Theft Auto IV . It allows you to manipulate objects, cars and even people at a distance. We can both carry them and use them as missiles. This provides a completely different experience from any other weaponry available in the basic version of Grand Theft Auto IV.
6. Watch Dogs Mod
The major GTA IV overhaul, modded by ac.amir and JulioNIB, looks so convincing that at first glance it’s hard to tell this isn’t Ubisoft’s open-world hacking game. The mod doesn’t just give the protagonist a sweet leather jacket and hat like Aiden Pearce (cause that would kind of be cool on its own); it actually gives GTA players many of the hacking abilities available in Watch Dogs, as well.
The gameplay footage shows off the new ability to cause car accidents by manipulating traffic lights, activate traffic barriers, and tap the many cameras located throughout Liberty City. Players also have the ability to get rich by hacking ATM machines in true Watch Dogs fashion. If you’ve played both games, you’ll also notice that the classic GTA GUI has been modified to match the layout out the Watch Dogs interface.
7. Spiderman Mod
My spider-sense is tingling… and it’s because there’s yet another superhero mod for GTA IV! This time it’s the Spider-Man IV script, which introduces Liberty City to the masked hero who shoots webs, sticks to walls, beats up policemen, and swings around from skyscrapers, just like spider can. And since Peter Parker is a photographer by trade, there’s even a neat photo mode that slows down time to a crawl (heh) to easily allow you to snap pretty pictures of everybody’s favorite web-slinger.
8. The Delorean Time Machine Mod
The creator of the Back to the Future Grand Theft Auto mod (SeedyROM34 on YouTube), spent months working on the elaborate creation with many hours of file editing thrown into the bargain. This is quite a bit more than just a skin. There’s time travel, an excellent-looking Marty McFly character, and a detailed DeLorean complete with flux capacitor.
There’s also a plutonium control, a date control with number pad, fire trail for the time travel function, and all the right sound effects.
9. Iron Man Mod
The creator of the Iron Man mod for Grand Theft Auto IV returns with a sequel: the Iron Man IV mod . It adds several different incarnations of Iron Man’s suits and complements your hand and chest repulsors with new weapons like micro-missiles, shoulder darts, and a minigun. Once again, you can streak through the skies over Liberty City as Iron man, battling cops and choppers, causing millions of dollars in property damage, and terrifying citizens. And who wouldn’t want to do that?
10. Left 4 Liberty Mod
Left 4 Liberty: Infection is a mod for Grand Theft Auto IV created by Motorsport71. It introduces zombie mode to single player. During the day the streets are almost completely empty, but when the night falls they get filled by very fast and deadly living dead. They attack without mercy and cause a lot of collateral damage. Our only goal is to survive and if we get infected we also need to find a cure before it’s too late.
