One Tree Hill is an American television drama series created by Mark Schwahn, which premiered on September 23, 2003, on The WB. After the series’ third season, The WB merged with UPN to form The CW, and from September 27, 2006, the series was broadcast by The CW in the United States until the end of its run in 2012.
The show is set in the fictional town of Tree Hill in North Carolina and initially follows the lives of two half-brothers, Lucas Scott and Nathan Scott, who compete for positions on their school’s basketball team, and the drama that ensues from the brothers’ romances. Take a look below for our list of 10 of the best One Tree Hill characters.
Brooke Baker, better known both personally and professionally as Brooke Davis is a fashion designer and entrepreneur originated from Tree Hill, North Carolina. The daughter and only child of Robert and Victoria Davis, Brooke is among the original core five characters including herself, childhood best friend and occasional rival Peyton Sawyer, close friend Nathan Scott, on and off-again boyfriend Lucas Scott, and eventual best friend Haley James Scott.
Originally portrayed as outgoing and promiscuous, she fell for Lucas early in season one and revealed herself to be a much less confident and insecure girl. She had her heart broken twice by him due to the complicated relationship he held with her best friend, Peyton. During high school, she attempted to mend her broken heart by creating Clothes Over Bro’s (C/B), a fashion venture that would prove to become a million-dollar enterprise after graduation. During this time, she befriended former rival Rachel Gatina and eventually began a relationship with Tree Hill newcomer Chase Adams.
After the series’ time jump in season five, however, Brooke was depicted as the highly successful owner and head designer at Clothes Over Bro’s, though she was seen as having problems with her mother and company CEO, Victoria Davis. Despite her being appeared as happy and content in her life in New York, she felt as though money and power were not enough to warrant happiness and, upon speaking with Peyton during a phone conversation, moves back to Tree Hill. As a young adult (15-23) over the course of the fifth and sixth seasons, Brooke struggled to open her heart due to the numerous heartbreaks she faced during her childhood and late adolescence.
Upon their meeting in season six, her romance with filmmaker Julian Baker would change much of that. For the remainder of the series, the two would face numerous obstacles, namely Brooke’s unwillingness to open herself to Julian, their attempt at maintaining a long-distance relationship, and the thorn in her side that was Alex Dupre. Despite a brief separation in the seventh season, Brooke and Julian were married in season eight amid the heartbreaking news of her inability to have children. Much to their surprise, however, Brooke gave birth to twin sons Davis and Jude Baker later in the season.
Nathan Royal Scott is the only son of Deb Scott, but is the second son of Dan Scott, who had previously impregnated his high school sweetheart, Karen Roe, with their son, Lucas Scott. Nathan was a high school basketball player dreaming of being accepted by his father. He is faced with a challenge as Lucas, his biological half-brother, joins his high school basketball team, The Tree Hill Ravens, and threatens to steal his spot as shooting guard. Later, learning about Lucas’ best friend, Haley James, Nathan decides to use Haley to anger Lucas, but eventually ends up falling in love and marrying her.
He lives in Tree Hill, North Carolina. Lucas had initially thought of Nathan as a jerk, partly due to the fact that he hadn’t been accepted by the Ravens due to Nathan trying to sabotage him as a player. Nathan and Lucas eventually find their love for each other and decide that they are now officially brothers. Haley eventually falls pregnant with Nathan and her’s first child, a son to be named James “Jamie” Scott. The name James was chosen to honor Haley’s parents and as a reminder that Haley will always be, Haley (James) – Scott. Nathan is known as a very great father over the years to Jamie, and to his daughter, Lydia Bob Scott.
After learning that Jamie was kidnapped in season 5 at Lucas’ failed wedding to Lindsey, he jumps in front of a police car, almost killing himself, in order to get help to bring his son home. After graduation from Tree Hill High School, Nathan is tragically hurt in an accident during a fight and is put into a wheelchair, unfortunately not being able to join the Seattle Sonics. He began rehabilitation in his training for basketball with the help of Quentin Fields, who is later murdered at a gas station by an unknown suspect.
He then was recruited by the Charleston Chiefs before later being drafted into the NBA for the Charlotte Bobcats. After having trouble dealing with back pain, he is left with no choice but to resign, and then decides to take on basketball as a sports agent. Nathan’s transition has been noted as one of the most remarkable on One Tree Hill; he goes from your typical high school jerk to a man who’d do anything for the people he loves.
Peyton Elizabeth Scott is Larry and Anna Sawyer’s adopted daughter. She was originally a rebellious cheerleader who first met her husband, Lucas Scott, during their junior year, when she was the girlfriend of the popular jock Nathan Scott, who also happened to be Lucas’s half-brother. Peyton struggled through the death of both her biological and adoptive mothers, but overcame the hardship and emerged a stronger woman from it. She was known for her strength and independence.
Portraying her emotions through art and music, Peyton established a music label after a miserable start of her career in the music business with a big label in Las Angeles . Through this label, she found and signed Mia Catalano, and they soon become good friends. After her wedding and the birth of her daughter, Sawyer Brooke Scott, Peyton and her family moved away from Tree Hill, leaving the label to be run by Haley James Scott, one of Peyton’s best friends along with Brooke Davis. Brooke and Haley constituted Peyton’s life and have been her greatest support system after all her grief she went through.
Peyton was always best friends with Brooke Davis, a friendship that overcame many troubles during high school and managed to survive even after graduation, despite a vast geographical separation.
Haley Bob James is the seventh child, and the fourth daughter of Jimmy and Lydia James. Haley is originally introduced, as the typical extremely responsible and studious girl, and as Lucas Scott’s best friend (they are BFF, since second grade), through him, she will meet her future husband : Nathan Scott (Lucas paternal half-brother), when both are at their 9th grade in high school. Despite all the predictions and conspiracies of her husband parents, she and Nathan, will remain together throughout high school and for the rest of their lives.
In season 4, while they are still in high school, Haley and Nathan, discover they are expecting a baby, a boy, that they decide to name : James Lucas (affectionately called : Jamie). In the eighth season, Haley and Nathan will welcome their second child, a girl : Lydia Bob. She had displayed extreme loyalty to the people she holds close to her, particularly Lucas, Nathan, Peyton Sawyer and Brooke Davis, but her first priority was always her family.
She did, however, have her own dreams to follow and wanted to pursue her music interests, but found it difficult to balance being a mother to her children and following her dreams, as well as her husband’s life and constantly changing careers and moving. After her mother’s death Haley struggled with depression but her second pregnancy helped her to recover from it.
Haley has been Lucas Scott’s best friend for life, he will also eventually become, her brother-in-law, and the godfather of her first born : Jamie Scott. In addition, she and Nathan together, decide to use Lucas, as Jamie’s middle name.
After her involvement with Nathan, she, Brooke and Peyton(Nathan’s ex girlfriend) formed a close group and often shared each other’s problems, the two girls will eventually become his two best friends, especially Brooke.
Lucas is the son of Karen Roe and Dan Scott. He was abandoned by his father Dan and was raised by his single mom and paternal uncle Keith Scott. When Lucas joined the varsity Ravens basketball team which his estranged half-brother Nathan Scott was a part of, Nathan began making Lucas’ life more difficult every day. Lucas had a passion for basketball and played at the River Court with his friends Skills Taylor , Fergie Thompson, and Junk Moretti, with Mouth McFadden usually giving commentary.
His best friend, Haley James, fell for Nathan which eventually drew Nathan and Lucas to become close companions and, eventually, true brothers. Lucas also began writing and had his first book published about the people of Tree Hill during his college course. In high school, Lucas was involved in relationships with best friends Brooke Davis and Peyton Sawyer, Peyton then later eventually becoming his wife and mother to their child, Sawyer Brooke Scott. Following Sawyer’s birth, Lucas and Peyton moved away from Tree Hill.
Daniel Robert “Dan” Scott is the biological father of Lucas and Nathan Scott. Dan learns about Lucas when Karen falls pregnant in high school. Unfortunately, he left her to pursue a relationship with Deb Scott, who falls pregnant a few months after Karen did with their son, Nathan Royal Scott. Dan asks Karen for custody of their son Lucas, which was turned down by Karen out of fear that Lucas would become like him. This was something that comes as a shock to Lucas after Dan tells him to go find out the truth from his mother.
After being turned down for custody, Dan began to despise Lucas, also due to the fact that Lucas was raised by Keith Scott, Dan’s older brother. Dan’s marriage with Deb came to an end as Deb tried to kill Dan in order to break away and divorce him. As a result of too much pressure under choosing sides, Dan’s younger son, Nathan, decides to emancipate himself which was suggested by his girlfriend, now wife, Haley James Scott. With the opinion that Keith’s intention was to kill him and take his son, Dan shoots Keith in the Tree Hill High School hallway, killing him. Dan had always been jealous of Keith. He was the man whom Karen gave all her attention besides Lucas to. Keith was the man Lucas thought of as his hero.
Dan didn’t have that with his eldest son, no matter how much he wanted to. Keith had been telling Jimmy Edwards, a student who had brought a gun to school, causing a school lockdown and now was trying to kill himself that it gets better. Dan thought Keith was talking to him, which made Dan think, “It doesn’t get better.” This all was why Dan shot Keith. And now Keith was going to be a father to Karen’s second child, Lily Roe Scott, which was unknown to Karen until after Keith’s death. Lily was born the same day that Dan’s younger son Nathan becomes a father, to Jamie Scott, his first born child, a son, with Haley.
Dan decides to let Jimmy Edwards, the boy who commits suicide in the hallway of Tree Hill High School take the blame for Keith’s death, even fooling Lucas into believing that it was Jimmy that killed his uncle. Dan now tried to play a role in the life of unborn Lily, helping with the pregnancy. Lucas soon finds out the truth about Dan murdering Keith, yelling to his mother, “He killed Keith, he shot him!” Pointing at Dan after catching his mother and father making out. Dan accused Lucas of needing psychological help and recommended he gets some. The day that both Lily and Jamie come into the world was the same day that Dan turned himself into the police for murdering Keith, giving up his soon-to-be relationship with Lily along with his spot as mayor, along with his successes over the years and his relationship with Karen. “My name is Dan Scott,” he says to the front desk of the police station. “I killed my brother.”
After years in jail, Dan Scott was set free and soon forms a strong bond with his grandson, Jamie. With the thought he might have died due to his heart condition, Dan left his grandson and instead turned his attention to Rachel Gatina, his new wife. He started to preach about redemption in an attempt to win back the love and support of his family that was taken away the day the trigger of the gun used to kill Keith was pulled. Dan received a heart transplant as well. He later forms a strong bond with Jamie and Lydia Scott, his granddaughter via Nathan and Haley. Unfortunately, Dan only met his granddaughter via Lucas and Peyton, Sawyer Scott once. Dan also decided to help out at Karen’s Cafe, run by Haley and Brooke. When he learned his son was still missing, Dan went on a hunt to retrieve his son.
He ended up killing most of the men working for Dimitri, the main kidnapper. After soon finding his son, Nathan and Dan were spotted by Dimitri. Dimitri took out his gun and aimed at Nathan. Ever since Nathan was little, his father had nothing but love for him. This was proved when Dan jumped in front of Nathan, the bullet going through Dan’s back. After shooting Dan, Dimitri was then distracted while telling Nathan that he will “join his father” referring to how his father had a bullet in his back. Nathan then pulled out a gun from his back pocket and shoots Dimitri, killing him. Dan was then taken to a hospital by Nathan and Julian, Brooke’s husband. Dan was awake at the hospital, saying his last words to his grandchildren, Deb, his daughter-in-law Haley, and Nathan. Lucas did not show up for Dan, which was understood by Dan, considering Dan had never been there for Lucas’ life, so, “why should Lucas be there for his.”
Dan later died while laying in the hospital bed, surrounded by Nathan, Haley, Jamie, Lydia, and Deb. While slowly making his way to hell, Keith meets Dan halfway, telling him he forgave him and took him to heaven. Dan’s transformation over the course of the whole series has been noted as the most remarkable out of all transitions on One Tree Hill. He goes from the controlling father, to the dangerous murderer, to the man who took a bullet though his skin for the sake of his son.
7. Mouth McFadden
Marvin “Mouth” McFadden is a sports news anchor who attended Tree Hill High School. He was part of the gang who played basketball at the River Court, commentating the games with Jimmy Edwards. However, like Lucas and Haley, Mouth eventually became embroiled in the world of the popular cliche. He was rocked by the death of Jimmy, after they grew distant, during the school shooting and refused to let people think of him as a monster.
He is commonly seen as a friend by girls whom he likes such as Brooke, Rachel and Shelley. But, after graduating college, he found love with Millicent Huxtable. He is not what the average normal girl would consider getting involved with romantically or even find attractive. The girls he has eyes for see him as the “cute brother” type, which doesn’t ever lead to possible romance. Mouth often finds himself nursing a wounded heart. But lately, his luck seems to be turning around with Millie. Although their relationship has been strained at times, Mouth and Millicent are married and expecting a son and host a morning show.
Julian Baker was a film Producer who arrived in Tree Hill to create a film adaption of Lucas Scott’s first novel, who was unaware of Julian’s history with Peyton Sawyer. He eventually revealed an interest in Peyton’s best friend, Brooke Davis. When the film’s production fell through, he left town for Los Angeles, but Brooke, who had realized and accepted her feelings for him, followed him.
Deciding to let him into her life, the two reunited. The two then embarked on a long-distance relationship while he made a new movie, but they eventually reunited in Tree Hill, and got engaged. The couple was later married, and had twin sons, Davis and Jude Baker. After the birth of his children, he acquired a soundstage and began a TV series based on Brooke’s life in high school called Ravens.
9. Jamie Scott
James Lucas “Jamie” Scott is the son of Nathan and Haley Scott and older brother of Lydia. He was born on their graduation day at about the same time as his aunt, being the half-sister of his uncle — Lucas Scott, Lily Roe Scott. He was named after his godfather and uncle, Lucas Scott, while Brooke Davis takes the role of his godmother.
All of Nathan and Haley’s friends are close to Jamie and he sees them all as aunts and uncles. Jamie has a great adoration of his father and aspired to be like him, which was something that often inspired Nathan to do his best.
Quinn A. Evans is one of the seven siblings of Haley James Scott, the sister-in-law of Nathan Scott, the wife of Clay Evans, and the adoptive mother of Logan Evans. Free spirited and artistic, she found herself at a crossroads in her life after leaving her husband David Fletcher after discovering that he had become like a stranger to her. In need of direction, she returned to her hometown of Tree Hill to spend time with Haley and her family desperate for an indication as to what she should do with her life.
After David arrived in Tree Hill to try and reconcile with her, she asked him for a divorce and started to rely on Nathan’s agent, Clay Evans, for support. They have since entered a relationship after Clay overcame his worry that he would forget his late wife Sara. Quinn and Clay later had to deal with his stalker and her attempt on both of their lives but they became a stronger couple and people through it. Eventually, Quinn married Clay and adopted his son Logan from his first marriage.
