Pixel Dungeon is a traditional roguelike game with pixel art graphics and a simple interface. It is made by Watabou and inspired by Brogue. It is available on Android, iOS, Steam, and Desktop. Take a look below for 10 of the best Pixel Dungeon mods you can download right now.
1. Shattered Pixel Dungeon
Shattered Pixel Dungeon is a Roguelike RPG, with pixel art graphics and lots of variety and replayability. Every game is unique, with four different playable characters, randomized levels and enemies, and over 150 items to collect and use. The game is simple to get into, but has lots of depth. Strategy is required if you want to win!
2. Remixed Dungeon
Remixed Dungeon, previously (up to version 27.4) named Remixed Pixel Dungeon is a mod forked from a very early version of Rodrigo Pan’s Pixel Dungeon ML and developed by NYRDS team.
Remixed Dungeon is the 12th oldest mod of Pixel Dungeon that was released on December 12th, 2014 and the third oldest released in Google Play Store (also Dec. 2014), and is still in active development becoming since 2018 in the one of the only two mods (of 12) that remain active made in 2014.
3. Sprouted Pixel Dungeon
Sprouted Pixel Dungeon (Sprouted/SpPD) is a fork of Shattered Pixel Dungeon, version 0.2.4 . It was first created and released in April 7th, 2015, by a Reddit user dachhack. The current version of Sprouted PD available by default to all players is 0.4.1 but there is also the beta version 0.4.2 available in Play Store, that contains only minor bug-fixes. It should be noted that many of Sprouted PD’s current differences from Shattered PD are in fact mirroring features of Shattered PD back then, and if you are interested in details about Shattered PD’s state in early 2015 you can visit this link.
The major focus of this mod is the farming and grinding system, using new methods to upgrade weapons and armor for boosted stats and effects. This mod also adds 3 new stages with 20 new depths, 2 new bosses and 1 new final boss, Zot. Sprouted is less about the race against diminishing resources, and more about pushing the limits of player power level.
Featuring greatly enlarged maps; challenging bosses and mini-bosses; new quests, enemies, items, and secrets; the revamped Dew Vial; with pixel art by PavelProvotorov.
4. Yet Another Pixel Dungeon
This mod is based on the source code of Pixel Dungeon v.1.7.5 (for details about the additions and changes in Original PD up to that point you can visit this link). It began as a small project with the goal to improve the original game here or there but has since gradually grown into something much, much bigger.
What makes this mod different from other mods is that it is mostly focused on tweaking game mechanics in order to make the game more interesting, diverse and balanced. It adds quite a few new things though, including new items, enemies and rooms. Despite all of this, it is still a tribute to the original game in its spirit, as general gameplay and visual style were left unchanged.
All that said, anyone who is familiar with the original game will have much to learn again in YAPD. It increases the game’s difficulty a bit, but with enough time and experience, it is not much more difficult than the original game. Especially considering that YAPD aims at being much more honest about its mechanics, featuring more detailed item descriptions and a huge list of loading tips (descriptions of wands, rings and buffs are coming later).
5. Skillful Pixel Dungeon
Skillful Pixel Dungeon is a mod directly based on Original PD v.1.9.1 (for details about the additions and changes in Original PD up to that point you can visit this link). It was first released in March 28th, 2015 by Reddit user Bibloldev and is one of the very few early mods that are still in active development. More particularly, Skillful PD is the only mod that remains in this active state out of the whole group of the 2015 mods.
6. Lovecraft PD
Lovecraft Pixel Dungeon (LCPD) is a mod of Shattered PD first released on November 21st, 2016 by TypedScroll. There are various different versions of this mod, from the abandoned old version of it with 2D graphics, to the most recent completed version which is based on Shattered Pixel Dungeon v.0.6.2 and is also currently abandoned. All versions have been created by TypedScroll/AnonymousPD. Also, the mod’s title and some parts of the game lore pay tribute to H.P. Lovecraft’s work.
It should be noted that the version assignment to 0.6.2 is not stated explicitly by the game, but is based on in-game evidence like the Rogue class having its current features of Shattered PD (change of version 0.6.2), whiile the wand of Venom still exists in this mod and is not replaced by the wand of Corrosion (change of version 0.6.3). For additions and changes in Shattered PD up to version 0.6.2 you can visit this link.
It used to be available in Play Store but it is not anymore, so currently you can only download it from ApkMonk or any other secondary hosting site, just make sure that the version you are downloading is the most recent completed, I.I.V or at least the just previous I.I.IV. (the very last version I.I.VI consists of only 10 depths, is incomplete, and was based on v.0.6.5 of Shattered).
The second part of this wiki article named “Older version” should not be taken into account at all by players of recent versions of LCPD. The “More recent version” section describes the most recent completed v.I.I.V.
7. Soft Pixel Dungeon
Soft Pixel Dungeon is a mod of Shattered PD created by Wolispace and first released on March 2nd, 2015. Its version is described as 0.2.3f_wm1 but it is just Shaterred PD’s 0.2.3. version of January 2015 with only two changes in the game that make it a lot easier: It allows by default saves from anywhere on the game depths (but does not include autosaving, so the player has always to do that manually by opening the in-game menu). There is the optional “Not so hard” mode, that gives all heroes a bigger search radius and most importantly makes high grass drop very often containers, common scrolls (almost always scrolls of Identify), darts, ration food items, potions of Healing and rings, along with the normal amount of seeds and dew.
8. Overgrown Pixel Dungeon
This mod was first released in January 2019 by TypedScroll/AnonymousPD and it is a mod of Shattered Pixel Dungeon. It used to be available in Play Store, but it is not anymore, so currently you have two options to download it, but each of them leads to a somewhat different version:
A) The latest version of this mod is only available in the “apks” channel of the Overgrown PD discord server and is numbered 0.0.3. The version of Shattered PD it was based on is not stated explicitly, but at the first glance it seems to be based on version 0.7.4, judging from the date of its release combined with the facts that: i) all the enemies added to Shattered PD recently are missing from Overgrown PD and even the Tengu fight is the familiar one from before, changes that started happening from version 0.7.5 and on, but ii) the wands of Living Earth and Warding that were added in version 0.7.4 of Shattered PD do exist in this version. Nevertheless, to be more accurate about it, it is actually 0.7.3 1/2 of Shattered PD as the two wands of 0.7.4 have been added but not other of that version’s features.
B) In contrast, the version of this mod that you will see being available in various hosting sites but not in Play Store when you google for it (for example in ApkPure) is numbered 0.0.2a and it is most probably based on version 0.7.1 of Shattered PD, but again not stated explicitly (the reason for this version estimation is the exιstence of the huntress rework of 0.7.1 but not of the alchemy readjustements with the new and removed recipes of 0.7.2). This wiki page describes both 0.0.2a and 0.0.3 versions and in the infobox it offers download links for both. For additions and changes in Shattered PD until version 0.7.4 you can visit this link.
Its name is related to the addition of living plants and of many new plant types and vegetation-related effects. There are many changes implemented and new features added to Shattered PD, some of them having also occured in previous mods of its developer, mostly in Lovecraft PD but also in Statistics PD. These changes and original features are listed below and most of them are related with vegetation and alchemy, but the features that remain from Shattered PD are not mentioned in detail, so if something seems to you missing or not familiar in Overgrown PD, you should better visit also Shattered PD’s pages. In the 0.3.0 sections are included the changes/new features up to version 0.3.0 sneek peek 30 of January 2020 in Discord, which was the very last one released, while the 0.2.0a sections describe the changes/features of the mod version publicly available in various hosting sites.
It should be also noted that the sections for both versions 0.0.2a and 0.0.3 are recent additions to the wiki, and Overgrown PD contains many fine details, especially in its alchemy, so if you encounter any game feature that is not described in the wiki or it has been described inaccurately, feel welcome to write about this detail in the comments at the bottom of this page.
9. Moonshine Pixel Dungeon
Moonshine Pixel Dungeon is a mod based on Shattered Pixel Dungeon, originally created by Sadsaltan and Juh9870 and first released in September 17th, 2017. Although no specific version of Shattered PD that the mod was based on is mentioned, it was most probably based on version 0.6.0, judging from the files of the published game code and the existence/absence of Shattered PD’s original game features (it might have also implemented details of v.0.6.1 though). For details about the additions and changes in Shattered PD up to that point of its development you can visit this link.
The mod began as a fusion of much smaller mods: Dreamful PD by Sadsaltan and Forbidden PD by Juh9870. As the developers have written in the wiki, “after having inherited features from its predecessors, it continued to grow into something much larger and bugful”.
10. Your Pixel Dungeon
Your Pixel Dungeon is one of the first generation modifications of the game, first released on September 23th, 2014 by Eric Britsman. It gives the option to the player to determine a run’s RNG by specifying in advance how many items and of which kind will spawn on each dungeon depth and also how many enemies, by creating custom maps.
For example, if the player wants a very easy run, he/she will determine that on the first depth 5 healing potions, 4 potions of Strength, 5 Scrolls of Upgrade, 1 war hammer and 1 plate armor will spawn.
Nevertheless if the player will just choose to play the default version of the game, that is the same with version 1.7.5 of Original PD (the version was stated explicitly in a wiki post upon its release) but without degradation and the Auto-repair/Tempered glyph/weapon enchantment and as such it lacks some important features of the current Original PD.
