10 Of The World’s Most Popular Sports

You can either call them the most loved sports of all, or call them the most revenue-generating sports activities; there are some games which have stolen the hearts of millions of people all across the globe, irrespective of caste, gender, ethnicity and geographical location. The origin of the sport could be anywhere from around the world, but that particular sport is probably loved and followed by millions and billions of people far and wide. There are a lot of sports which compel people from all over to get glued to their television sets at home, and for some extreme fanatics, that particular sport is all what they can see and turn it into the most important part of their life.

This magic and power of sports is no different in one country or continent than in the other, because sports is actually one thing which brings different people together, to celebrate and to enjoy. The amount of people who are fans of these different type of sports is obviously beyond what we can imagine, thus making certain sports extremely popular and revenue generating, because they watched by so many people all over the world. 1. Soccer

Soccer, football or call it the Association football, this sport is played between two teams with eleven players each. The objective of the game is to get the spherical shaped football into the opponent’s goal by using any part of your body except for your hands and arms. Football is considered as the most popular sport in the world, due to its fan following and large participation all over the world.

2. Cricket

Cricket is a sport played with a bat and a ball between two teams with eleven players each. The patch they play in is fixed right in the middle of the field which is 22 yards in length. When one team takes it’s turn to bat, the other team fields and ensures that the team batting finds it difficult to make runs.

3. Basketball

Basketball remains to be the third most played and watched sport in the world. It is played in between two teams with five players each, where they play with the ball to shoot it through a hoop which is 18 inches in diameter and 10 feet high. The hoops are attached on two ends of the rectangular field on to a blackboard.

4. Hockey

Hockey is another popular sport played around the world, apart from it being the national game of India and Pakistan. It is played by two teams where the ball is controlled and played across the field with a hockey stick and strike the ball into the opponent’s goal. Another version of this sport known as ice hockey is also extremely followed and played by many.

5. Tennis

A bigger and lawn version of table tennis, tennis or lawn tennis is played between two people or among four players as doubles. A net divides the court in two halves and the players hit the tennis ball with their rackets into the opposite player’s half. The main objective of this game is to hit the tennis ball in such a way that the other player finds it difficult to give a better shot back to you.

6. Table Tennis

Table Tennis, also known as Ping Pong, can either be played between 2 players or among four. It is played with table tennis rackets, on a hard table which is divided in between by a net. A light weight ball is used and players stand on two sides of the table, and hit it to the opposite player with the racket where the ball is allowed to tap on the table only once.

7. Baseball

Baseball is played with a bat and ball, and is played between two teams with nine players each. The offense hits the ball with the bat, and the ball if thrown to him by the pitcher. The offense needs to score higher points than the opponent team, which is done by moving or running counter clockwise around four bases which are the first, second, third and the home plate base. When the runner runs around all the four bases and reaches the home plate, that’s when the team scores points.

8. American Football

American football is another sport in this list of the most loved sports, and it is usually called football in the United States and gridiron in other countries. This game is played by 2 teams with eleven players each. There are two goalposts at both ends of the 120 yards long by 53.3 yards wide rectangular field. The players play with an oval shaped ball and advance towards the goalposts and advance it at least 10 yards in four downs, after which they receive another set of four downs. They can either do this by running with the ball or passing it to the other players.

9. Rugby

Rugby is a sport most popularly played in Spain and France. This game gained its popularity when the British colonizers took this game along with them initially to South Africa, where it was introduced in the 19th century. This game then established its influence in Australia and New Zealand, and then globalised itself and spread through the world.

10. Golf

Golf is not only one of the most popular sports, but known as a luxury game as well. This sport is played with a club and a ball, and deals with hitting the balls with different types of clubs, and hit them in such a way that they go and fall into the different holes dug in the ground. As each hole carries different points, the point of the game is to stroke higher points with the fewest number of strokes possible for you. The art os playing this sport by making points with the lowest strokes possible, and at the same time sticking to the rules and regulations of the game makes Golf a tough sport for many.
